2008 at a glance and New Years Resolutions

2008 has been an interesting year for me for sure. Lots of craziness, memorable occurrences, and interesting times. Here's a recap:

--Was laid off from my last job for reasons completely outside of my control.

--Got my old band, LowFlyer, back together, recorded a great three song demo, my first time in a fully professional studio.

--Played The Boardwalk for the first time, which has been a goal/dream of mine for the past eight years--back when i was in ToeFinger5, up in Redding.

--Band broke up shortly after playing the Boardwalk.

--Found a new job that looked like it was awesome. Job position ended, and instead of getting laid off, I got promoted to a new position. Best. Job. Ever.

--Had my Xbox 360 red ring TWICE.

--Celebrated my first year wedding anniversary (second year this February).

--Learned the awesomeness of Greader and have streamlined my blog-reading nerdiness.

--Have played a shit-ton of Guitar Hero and Rock Band games.

--Started a Death Knight in WoW, and have two characters over 60 now. Never thought I'd get that high, but my paladin is rockin'.

That's all I can really think of at the moment... I'm sure there's more, but that's all that's popping into my head now. Regardless, it's been a decent year, not without it's ups and downs, but been pretty good.

As far as New Year's Resolutions, I probably have even less... But what I can think of, I think are pretty good... Here's what I can think of now:

--Be a better husband to my wife.

--Make more time for photography, and take more pictures.

--Use my film cameras more.

--Somehow, some way, get a digital SLR.

--Blog more often, with more important and viable content.

--Quit smoking Keep not smoking (today is 15 days without a single drag from a cigarette.

--Become much more skilled above and beyond expectations with the app at work.

--Be a better communicator.

--Play in Photoshop more.

--Procrastinate less.

--Market this blog more often.

--Get off my ass with some other web projects.

--Eat smaller portions, and eat better.

--Learn at least some more PHP.

Hrm... i think that works for now. I'm a bit distracted at work, and can't think, but I wanted to get this posted before I head home for the day, so it's here for sure. That whole not procrastinating thing.

Good luck to everyone with their New Year's Resolutions, have a wonderful New Year's Eve, be safe, and have fun.

See you all in 2009!

The Pretty Pretty Princess Cube Prank

A senior tech--known for pulling pranks--goes on vacation, returns to find his cube completely girlied out. Epic fairy power!

Upgraing Drupal: Why is it so goddamned hard??

If you don't know, this site is powered by the Drupal CMS. It's fast, powerful, scalable, and overall pretty damn hot. But aside from a few minor gripes (features not built-in that should be such as blogrolls, comment notification, etc etc), I like it a lot. Save for one major issue.

Upgrading an install.

My computer is screaming in pain.

So yeah, been pretty much non-existent on the blogging front recently. Same with Twitter as well, which is unusual. But, not that I've had much interesting to talk about anyways, so that's to be expected I guess.

I got promoted at work, and now my job actually entails doing work (what a concept!), and has been keeping me quite busy (both physically and mentally). This I'm severely glad for, actually. Downside is, all of my blogging pretty much has to be done from home now. And that's difficult for a few reasons, a large one being the fact that my computer has been screaming in agony the past few months.

An Experiment: Local Band Recommendations

So I'm sitting in Orgrimmar fishing (in WoW, of course), listening to the madness in Trade Chat with Pulah and BanPulah.com, and had a random thought.

I'd like for everyone who sees this post to leave a comment and suggest ONE LOCAL BAND (local to them, of course) that they like, and link them up. I'd like to hear some new music, figures this would work alright. I'll go ahead, listen to 'em all, and try to post some rather non-biased and non-judgmental reviews on this blog when I can get through the bands, and whatnot.

Prop 8 is Winning?? How The Hell Is That Possible??

Hot asian girl kissing

So, Obama Won. Hooray! But, being a liberal Californian, there's one other pressing matter yet to be finalized on this year's vote--Proposition 8, the ban on gay marriage that, if passed, will amend the state Constitution that will recognize only marriages between a man and a woman as valid marriages.

It's a close one, less than a 10% spread between the yays and the nays, with the people of California speaking with over--to quote director Greg Yaitanes (@GregYaitanes)--5 million votes of hate.

But the bigger question, upon looking at the ballot initiatives nationwide for various states, is how the fuck is this possible? I mean, we're California for crying out loud, the most liberal of liberals, the most forward thinking of forward thinking states. But while our rednecked bass-ackwards gay-hating douchebag half of the state is voting us into infringing upon human rights and equality, here's a roundup of what OTHER states are ALLOWING after the jump:

No on Prop 8 - Why, Google, why??

So I made the last blog post about EndeverafteR in Rock Band 2, and what do I see? Not one, but TWO Adsense ads saying Yes on Prop 8. Boooo. And Google is one of the largest backers of No On Prop 8, but these ads are popping up EVERYWHERE, even on TechCrunch.

I happen to be an opponent of closedminded assholeishness (if that's even a real word, and if not, well, it is now), and believe that people have choices, and those choices should be equally available to everyone.

Not to mention that a good friend of mine is pretty hot, and the thought of her married to another girl is equally hot. But, I digress.

So... I say this, in an attempt to game the Adsense contextual system:

No On Prop 8

Equal Rights

No On Prop 8

Equal Rights

Whoa. Anyone ever notice that "No On Prop 8" and "Equal Rights" have the same amount of letters/spaces? Interesting.

Anyways. Here's to getting Adsense to get that crap off of my blog.

Sacramentos local glam rockers EndeverafteR in free Harmonix Rock Band 2 pack!

Even though EndeverafteR's myspace page says they're from Los Angeles, CA, those from Sacramento know that they're really from the City Of Trees.

Glam rock and hair metal with a modern twist is what makes up this band's chemistry, which is a bit different than their roots, when they were called just Endever, which was a more moody, morose sound. Oddly, the band's wikipedia page doesn't mention the band before the name change.

Love 'em or hate 'em, either way, Sacramentoans will be surprised to see them in the new 20 song freebie track pack for Rock Band 2, known as the Harmonix Gift Horse Track Pack, if you're going by the Kotaku brand of reality.

Hit the jump to see the whole track list, and the video for their song, "I Wanna Be Your Man", coming to Rock Band 2 on November 4th.

Revision3 Lays Off Staff, Cuts Shows--Oh Noes!!!

Good ol' Revision3, the internet geek's favorite high-budget webshow company, has laid off some staff. With this comes a cut of some shows. What shows? Well, PixelPerfect with Bert Monroy to start, as well as PopSiren with Sarah Lane, and everybody's favorite East Coast-er, Wine Library TV with Gary Vaynerchuk. Sad sad sad. Not only does this impact the people laid off, but I think it's got some really negative impacts for Revision3.
