Fixed: Comments and more!

By Lou - Posted on 20 May 2008

Drupal is new to me. Very new. But I like to think that I'm learning the quirks and ins and outs pretty well. Every once in a while I end up with some major issues that take me a day or two of stupid head-bashing to get fixed, but after a while it falls into place and I think to myself "Erm... wow, that was easy". Such is the case with the comments here.. What'd I do? Just keep reading.

I added the WP-comment module to help streamline the comments to look like WP2.5, always a good thing, since it's short and too the point. Also removed the Subject line field, since it's annoying. But now it's auto-subjecting the posts... Subjects in comments are pretty lame in my book, and just one extra step requiring an extra 5 seconds of work or so for everyone. Or you skip it, and it looks dumb duplicating the first four words of your damn comment.

Also, I was wondering why I constantly was having nothing but Anonymous comments, and I'm sitting here going "Who the hell is this??". Turns out my ignorance to Drupal shone through: Drupal apparently leaves the comment setting to where Anonymous commenters cannot leave their contact info (name/email/site). Well, that's been fixed. So now you're getting the linkbacks that you commenters oh so deserve.

Another annoyance was the mandatory Preview before getting to Save. That's been eliminated. Thank god.

Also, the big issue here was the blank screen of death. Upon Saving the comment, it would store the comment to the database, and then generate a white page. So people go back, and Save again. They then give up. Not the case anymore. Seems that in my attempts to create an Action/Trigger that would email me upon new comments, I hosed the system and created an error somewhere. I unassociated the Action from the Trigger, and voila! It works!

So Slap/Pop is that much closer to being bug- and annoyance-free. If anyone else has some fun ideas for a Drupal site, or modules/snippets that you think would help me, please feel free to comment and let me know!
