Ex-Googlers Form Cuil - Claimed to be Bigger Than Google, But...

Some key personnel from Google have left the Mountain View, CA tech haven in search of their own Valley Gold. Again. This one, however, has a decent chance. Cuil is purported to be the largest search engine in the world, claiming to index three times as many pages as Google, and ten times as many as Microsoft's engine. But... Something here doesn't look right. Or at least, is a big tech bug that is screaming to be fixed. Cuil doesn't seem to know a lot about a lot! What do I mean by that? Pics after the jump.

I was doing some searching last night that ended up in my last post about Drupal/Joomla site development. Using the simple query of "drupal vs joomla" without quotes, I found a good deal of info on Google.

As you can see, there's a LOT of results. Yeah, I'm only concerned with the first few handfuls of pages, but still. That's a lot of results that COULD be what I'm looking for. Now, what Cuil is supposed to do is refine that query into what I'm really looking for. Does it work? Well, let's give it a try with the exact same query.

I wish I'd used Cuil last night while searching, because it would've saved me a lot of time. Cuil seems to automatically knows that absolutely NONE of the content on the web resulting from this query will help me!! How does it know this wonderful knowledge???

Either that, or, well, there's the much more mundane option of "It just sucks at life as a search engine". Yeah, it could be that Cuil (at least as of right now) is just a failboat.

Now to be fair, it is a brand new search engine. Brand spankin' new. So it'll have some glitches... I'll keep checking in with the project to see if it doesn't rectify it's omniscient-or-absent-minded ways. We'll see how it goes.

UPDATE: Looks like Cuil now indexes a LOT more data, as when I started typing in the same query of "Drupal vs Joomla", it immediately started giving me query suggestions a la FF3's Google search bar. When I hit Enter and it brought up the results, a good ten pages or so were found. However, only two articles with the phrase "Drupal vs Joomla" were found, and each were listed two or three times in various forms/links, whatever. Definitely not the same results as Google, as most of the Cuil results weren't even close to what I was looking for.

Almost, Cuil, almost.

I wouldn't call it so much of a waste of time, just more that at least right now, it's an inferior product that looks a crap-ton sexier. Kind of like the dumb blonde in high school. Won't help you pass your bio mid-term, but is SOOO nice to look at.

For some reason I'm having a hard time pronouncing "cuil" as "cool". It looks more like "quill" or even "coil".
Cool? No way.
